Chelsea Resilient

Stop 2

Chelsea Resilient is an 80-foot-long mural on Chelsea’s Broadway Street in Bellingham Square put up in 2021. This mural celebrates the rich history of Chelsea, beginning with the Native American communities that resided there to the now vibrant life of Central American immigrants in the city. The mural displays the challenges and successes of the people of Chelsea but in an optimistic light by celebrating their successes and prosperity. The mural works to display the urbanization of Chelsea alongside the diversity of the people.

While people of all different backgrounds, ethnicities, and cultures are represented in the mural, the mural works to display that the common ground for all of Chelsea’s residents is the public spaces of the city and the way that everyone interacts with them to learn, work, and thrive in the area. The purpose of adding this mural to the city, as told by the Chelsea Prosper neighborhood initiative, is an example of the “power of public art and the purpose of civic design.”

In preparation for creating the mural, David Fitcher interviewed dozens of city representatives, community groups, and regular members of the community to understand the leading themes of the city and stories of the people. Fitcher was “making real connections, breathing and moving within the spirit of Chelsea.” As a result, Fitcher produced the vibrant and extremely detailed mural piece that embodies the community of Chelsea.
