The Chelsea Walk

Stop 3

Chelsea Walk is an alley on Broadway between the Chelsea House of Pizza and the Chelsea Walk Pub. It used to be an unvital corridor full of pedestrians in the heart of Chelsea, but to strengthen the city’s sense of community, business connection, and public safety, a project called “Revitalizing Chelsea Walk '' was initiated several years ago. The project announced that there would be beautiful murals painted by local artists, public tables and benches, and art installations on the top of the walkway to provide shade. Dominican-American artist Sylvia Lopez Chavez was assigned to paint the murals for the Chelsea Walk. This was a wonderful opportunity for her to enhance the community connection by drawing a wonderful mural to all the residents.

Based on the reports from ChelseaRecord, lots of residents came to support the Chelsea Walk. The project set up a goal donation of $20,000 and the project raised $31,500 from 172 patrons. There are two specific examples from the reports of ChelseaRecord: Jose ‘Josey’ Cruz and Dimitris Meletlidis. Josey is the president of the Explorer Post 109, a community club aimed to help adolescents and teenages. He volunteered to build the Chelsea Walk with Sylvia, hoping that the community mural would make everyone in Chelsea proud. In addition, Dimitris, the owner of Broadway House of Pizza, who immigrated from Greece, also showed strong support for the Chelsea Walk, although he was skeptical about the project at the beginning. He paid much attention to the progress and provided free pizza for Sylvia and all the volunteers as well.

Now, Chelsea Walk has become a safe and beautiful public space for everyone to enjoy. This walkway not only reduces traffic congestion, but also sets up a colorful bridge between all the residents, so that people have the chance to learn more about their multicultural city.
